Trekking and Nature: The Trails of the Sabatini Mountains

The area around Trevignano Romano is a paradise for hiking enthusiasts.
Located within the Bracciano-Martignano Regional Natural Park, it offers trails suitable for everyone, from scenic family walks to more challenging treks through the woods.

The Rocca Romana Trail (CAI 266B)

This is the most iconic route for those who want to “dominate” the lake from above.

The experience: The trail starts near the Sports Field and climbs to the summit of Monte Rocca Romana (612 m), the highest peak in the area. You’ll walk through a forest of oaks, chestnuts, and majestic beech trees.

The view: Once you reach the viewpoint, your gaze sweeps across the entire lake basin, and on clear days you can even see the sea. It’s a loop of about 5-6 km, perfect for a half-day immersed in nature.

San Bernardino and Malpasso Trail (CAI 269)

A route that combines the spirituality of the village with the beauty of unspoiled nature.

The route: Starting from the charming Church of San Bernardino, the trail winds eastward. You’ll pass through the “Malpasso” area, which offers a privileged view of the Pantane Gulf.

Why choose it: It’s a less strenuous but extremely rewarding trail, ideal for those seeking peace and wanting to admire the local flora and fauna, such as the hawks that often soar over these hills.

The Woods Cycle Path

Don’t be fooled by the name: this route is also wonderful on foot.

The itinerary: A long route of about 17 km connecting Trevignano Romano to Oriolo Romano. It runs almost entirely through the undergrowth, offering a cool climate even in midsummer.

Details: This is the ideal trail for a long, meditative trek. Along the way, you can detour toward Sutri or Bassano Romano to explore neighboring villages.

The Path to Lake Martignano

For those seeking a wilder experience, there’s a connection to the “little brother” of Lake Bracciano.

The experience: A trek that will take you to discover Lake Martignano, a perfectly circular basin with no inhabited centers. The atmosphere here is suspended in time.

What to see: You can admire pastures, flowering meadows, and views that embrace both lakes simultaneously from the ridges of the Sabatini Mountains.

Useful tips for our guests

Water: Along the mountain trails, there are no refreshment points or fountains. Make sure to fill your water bottles in the village before setting out.

Clothing: Even though the trails are well marked, we recommend hiking boots with good soles to handle sections in the undergrowth that can be slippery after rain.

Respect for the environment: You’re in a Natural Park. Stay on the trails marked by CAI (white-red signs) and always take your waste with you.
